American Pearl

"Pearls in themselves are things of mystery and adventure; if you follow the career of a single pearl it will give you material for a hundred tales."
-- Isak Dinesen

What is American Pearl?
American Pearl, a project of the Louisville Rowing Club, will sponsor a team of two women, Tori Murden and Louise Graff, in the Atlantic Rowing Race in October of 1997. American Pearl's educational component involves schools throughout the Louisville area, while another component of the race will raise funds to benefit the community. Half of all funds raised will be held in a perpetual endowment at the Community Foundation of Louisville, with each year's income benefiting the Metro United Way. The other half of the funds will be available for the Louisville Rowing Club's educational projects, including expenses of preparation and equipment for the Atlantic Rowing Race.

How Can the Community Benefit?
Young people will learn the tools and equipment necessary for survival, and about the training, persistence and determination necessary a journey of this magnitude. In addition, they will learn about the importance of community action and support. Tori and Louise want to share the technical, physical and emotional components of their journey, not only to gain support, but also to inspire people to strive toward goals in their own lives.

How Can You Help?
Sponsors of American Pearl are welcome. Sponsorships can take the form of financial donations or in-kind contributions. American Pearl will discuss with major sponsors various forms of recognition: logo on the race boat, wearing of sponsor logo on clothing, mention in all news releases, public relations materials and world wide web page.
